General Session FAQ:
Here are some faq based on client inquiries. If you do not see your question listed here, feel free to email me.
How soon should I schedule my session?
I recommend about 6 weeks ahead of time or more. The earlier the better as you get better options of dates I have available. I do not work every weekend, therefore my weekend availability is slim and those dates go the fastest. I will do everything I can to fit your session into my schedule.
For maternity sessions, I recommend you book your session early in your second trimester. I prefer to do maternity sessions between 30-34 weeks.
For newborn sessions, be sure to read over my FAQ newborn session page. But I recommend booking newborn sessions in your second or third trimester. I do however, do my very best to fit in newborn sessions even after your newborn is here.
How long do sessions last?
It really depends on the session. For a full family session it takes about an hour, depending the size of your family. Maternity sessions are about the same, maybe a little less, again, depending on the size of your family. I don’t set time “limits”… these times are just to give you an estimate of how long it will take.
Where will our session take place?
Again, it depends on the session 🙂 What I offer is customized to each family and what they want. If booked in the winter, we can do an in-home session or a studio session at my home. Or we can brave the cold and do a session outdoors. I have many great outdoor locations, and once you have booked your session and filled out your contract, we will work together on deciding where to have your session take place.
What should we wear?
This is a fun one…. I recommend that you wear something you are comfortable in and what you would wear to an evening out. You want your portraits to remain timeless and you also don’t want to look like someone your not. I recommend coordinating, not matching. I typically start with one outfit for my kids that I love and then I build off of it grabbing complimentary colors and go from there. Layering is one of my favorites and adds a nice touch to a portrait. Great jewelry is another nice touch that adds an extra punch. For children, a cute hat can be fun for some portraits. I recommend stores such as gap which is my go to… H&M and J Crew. Avoid clothing with big logos and cartoon characters. And please avoid the white shirts and jeans! That look is long gone 🙂
I am happy to help you with your wardrobe, but be warned, if you ask for my advice you will likely receive many links via email as I get really into it and probably a bit carried away… just imagine how neurotic I can be for our own family portraits! 🙂
What is a typical session like.. what can we expect?
Expect a lot of fun and me chatting your ear off. I love to talk and I love people. Sessions are relaxed and fun. I am a goof ball and will do anything to make your children laugh and smile. I have been known to pretend to eat leaves, throw grass all over myself, and tickle mom and dad with a stick.. and you better laugh! If you have a baby, I will probably obsess over them and want to snuggle them. I miss having a baby in the house so bear with me 🙂
For a cake smash session, do we bring the cake? What else do I need to provide?
Clients are expected to bring their own cake for cake smash sessions. I will work with you to get everything planned ahead of time for the session. Cake smashes can be a lot of fun and should be planned ahead of time. You will want the cake and outfit your baby is wearing to coordinate. You can also do themes and more. I am happy to provide a banner for the background, I have several on hand, but most of my clients bring their own.
How long after the session will we receive our images?
Once we finish our session, I will post a peek to my Facebook page that day or the very next day. (if you are not on Facebook, I will email you a peek) I will have your gallery complete and digital images ready for download within 2 weeks after our session. Please be patient during the “busy” months as the turn around time can be up to 3 weeks. (i.e.. fall and spring)
Once I have my images, where do I print them?
This is a big one…. printing is a big deal and it is hard for me to let go of that control as I want your portraits to look perfect. Professionally printing your images is very important. I refer all of my clients to mpix.com to their printing needs. They sell professional quality prints to you, the consumer, for a great price. They also sell gallery wrapped canvas, albums, birth announcements and more.
You do not want to print your images at places like CVS, Wal Mart or any of the large chain stores. These stores have low quality printers and the colors will be greatly compromised if you print from one of the above mentioned places. Wherever you decide to print, be sure it is a professional lab.
Do you photograph weddings or events?
I do offer wedding photography here and there. I do not advertise it and it is not my specialty, but I do love to venture out and try new things. I have photographed a handful of weddings over the years and I always enjoy it. But I want to be the right fit for you. I do not offer event photography.
What equipment do I use?
Canon girl here! I have two different Canon bodies… one is a back up from when I first started, a 7D, but it mainly just hangs out in my bad. I shoot with a Canon Mark III and it is the best of the best. I have several lenses and prefer prime lenses over a zoom lens. My favorite lens is my 85mm 1.2, but I use my 35mm 1.2 in the studio. I shoot most of my families with my 50mm 1.2. I use natural light outdoors at all times and studio lighting in my studio, and a combination of studio light and natural light in my client’s home. I have a ton of props and I love going to antique stores!
